Corticosteroids
Corticosteroids (CS) are usually the first-line treatment for sarcoidosis because they provide strong and rapid anti-inflammatory effects. They act through several pathways, including inhibition of TNF-α, IFN-γ and related NF-κB signalling.
Treatment decisions depend on the organs involved, symptoms and risk of permanent damage. Your specialist determines the dose and duration for your situation.
Long-term benefits and risks must be reviewed regularly. Corticosteroids can improve symptoms and lung function, but prolonged use may cause important side effects. If disease remains active or steroid-sparing treatment is needed, specialists may consider medicines such as methotrexate or biologic therapy.
Never change, stop or add treatment without medical advice.
