Living well with sarcoidosis

Practical guidance for people living with sarcoidosis

Sarcoidosis is a serious, long-term illness. For people with chronic disease it can mean a lifelong struggle with pain, fatigue and uncertainty about the future. These challenges affect physical activity, emotional balance and peace of mind. To make everyday life easier, meaningful changes in lifestyle, nutrition and the way we think may be needed.

A healthy body naturally becomes tired during the day as it uses energy to maintain immunity and respond to physical and mental demands. A person with sarcoidosis may live with constant inflammation and pain, so the immune system is working hard even during rest or sleep. Fatigue and weakness are therefore common, especially during very hot weather, which can exhaust even healthy people.

Living with pain, breathlessness and weakness is extremely demanding, and the side effects of strong medicines can add to the burden.

Try to make time to release stress through meditation, time in nature when the weather allows, and any activity that helps you relax.

Nervousness, muscle tension, irritability and other reactions that accompany pain are normal. However, these states also consume energy. It is important to let go of persistent frustration, accept your current condition as a “new normal”, and adapt your life whenever and wherever possible.
